Graham Greene’s The Quiet American, published in 1955, examines the relationship between political idealism, innocence, colonialism, and moral responsibility against the background of Vietnam’s struggle for independence. Through Alden Pyle, an idealistic American, and Thomas Fowler, a sceptical British journalist, Greene explores the dangers of foreign intervention and the consequences of political decisions based on abstract theories rather than local realities. Pyle’s sincere belief in political reform contrasts with Fowler’s apparent neutrality, yet both characters reveal the limitations of their respective positions. The character of Phuong further connects political conflict with personal relationships, gender, and individual choice. Through irony, characterisation, and retrospective narration, Greene questions whether good intentions can justify harmful actions and whether neutrality absolves individuals of responsibility. This study examines the novel’s treatment of ideological conflict, human suffering, and ethical uncertainty. It argues that political intervention becomes dangerous when it disregards the experiences and aspirations of the people affected. The novel remains relevant for its critical examination of power, political idealism, and the moral consequences of human decisions.
